Your best bet is to ask your friends, you are looking for a lawyer who has a reputation for giving good advice and who is trustworthy. Avoid the ones who are supposedly rabid pit bulls or who say things like “you have a slam dunk case”. Also any lawyer who promises a win should be regarded with suspicion. Your average judge has heard every argument before and will go on whose case is correct in law not on who charges more or makes the most noise. Although there are never any guarantees in law a highly skilled lawyer has a significant advantage over one with less experience. It’s why I chose to specialise in family law rather than be a general practitioner.
The law society regulates law firms fairly closely and lawyers are not supposed to advertise their prices but nothing stops you from asking.
